Mexico Trip from 12 to 28 December 2003

FORWARD

My mom and I finally arrived on December 12, somewhen in the evening, after I had been up for over 30 hours savely in Mexico City. A friend of us picked us up at the airport. We would stay at his place for the next couple of days, before we really started our trip to our final destination Cancun.

From the Airport to his place we needed about an hours, just to show how big this city is. I will nevr complain about traffic anymore. About 6 hours later, well feed and having had my cuddles by his dogs, I finally could close my eyes and get my well earned sleep.

Saturday, December 13

Next morning, completely frozen I got up and first went to the dogs (huge dogs) to greet them. Seems I was the only one already up. Shortly after me my mom arose as well and we had coffee while waiting for our driver. In the meantime, even the sun finally decided to greet us as well and when we all were ready to leave the sky was clear of clouds, my suncream packed and ready to explore this country I have just visited shortly.

First stop was Xochimilco where we rented a boat all by ourselfs, had breakfast/lunch all in one, music, well simply our little venice.

Originally wanted to see the museum, we run out of time and decided to visit the Zocalo of Mexico City. First though our personal guide lead us to the Tower "Americano" where we enjoyed a lovely view over this town. I don't know why I remarked that this city seems so med. Buildings over buildings and no end to see.

After this very exhausting day I again fell into bed like a dead tree, this night getting all the blankets available, for I don't like to feel like a freezer.

Sunday, December 14

This day we went all the way south of Mexico City to first visit Cuernavaca and afterwards, we headed for Taxco, a little village in the mountains famous for its silver jewellery. Not really doing a lot except driving, eating and enjoying a great view as well this day passed by quiet fast.

Monday, December 15

Mexico - Teotihuacan - Puebla --> 234 Km

This day we would leave Mexico City and make our way to Puebla. On the road we first visited the pyramids of Teotihuacan (Moon- and Sunpyramid as well as the temple of Quetzalcoatl. After climbing up all the stairs, I first needed some reanimations. Once more I decided to do more sports when I am back home, it nearly killed me.

Afterwards we went back to Mexico City, visited the pilgrimage church of Guadalupe, before we once more drove through Mexico and to Puebla. Had I complained about traffic before yet, I take everything back and cannot belive that I am not still somewhere in the middle of it. Somewhen around 9/10 pm we finally arrived in Puebla.
Spanish TV is interessting...

Tuesday, December 16

Puebla - Oaxaca --> 350 Km

The next morning, we visited downtown Puebla, another Zocalo and then took the Panamericana, a really beautiful route to Oaxaca. On the Road to.... :
In the late evening we made it to hour hotel, changed and had to leave again, as there was planned a special suprise. We went to see some typical native indian dances called „Guelaguetza Native Dance Show“ .

Wednesday, December 17

Oaxaca - Monte Alban - Oaxaca --> 64 Km

Our second visit to a cultural place called Monte Alban Handled the steps better than before but still, need to work out a bit more.

This is a reallly lovely place, so high up on a platform, cool wind, not to hot, exactly right to explore and discover. After this trip we as well visited some Artesana Facturies, especially one where they prepare a unique black clay.
Back in Oaxaca City we strolled around the marked, got shown how they prepare chocolate, and ate dinner at the local market and chatted with people. Well at least I tried. One more point on my to do list.

Thursday, December 18

Oaxaca - Tehuantepec --> 263 Km

Old trees, why can't they tell their stories. I guess, no I am sure nothing would be the same anymore.

[2000 YEAR OLD TREE]

While wondering and walking around this tree, our friend discovered a nail in the tire. So, before we startet another long day in the Van, first we let fix the flat. Just to be on the safe side.
Back in the game we stopped at several occasion, e.g. to visist some carpet factories where they produce everything by hand or went looking how they produce Mesqual, the little brother of Tequila. And and and, cannot remember everything.

[Beautiful, isnt it] [EXPERIMENT *gg*]

Around 9 pm we made it to our goal, Tehuantepec. Well, I haven't really seen anything of this town close to the pacific, as it is mostly used for passing thoughts like us, having the opportunity to sleep an rest. But hey, they had at least HBO in the room. Oh, which reminds me of another point on my to do list.

Friday, December 19

Tehuantepec - San Cristobal de las Casas --> 371 Km

Still on the Panamericana, our way took us up and down the mountains, got into a Military Controll, until we reached one of our wanna does in Tuxtla Gutierrez. There we embarked the speed boat to explore the Sumidero-Canyon. The pictures speak for themself.

I think I haven't talked about the weather at all yet. Just wait, I start to complain just in a second. After safely back on fix ground, we went up and down a few hills more until we entered San Cristobal de las Casas. Oh my goodness, was it freezing there. Switzerland is nothing against it. Well, ok, I am exaggerating. But hey, I was on holiday, expected Sun, hot comfortable tempretature and have the same then back home, just without the right equipment. Once again I grabbed all blankets I could find in the hotelroom and covered myself up completely. Fortunate for me, we just stayed there one night as well.
